Reminder: Brevard County is still under a fertilizer ban (June 1 through September 30) to help us prevent more damage to a wonderful natural resource, the Indian River Lagoon.
Start your vegetable seeds now!
September is the time to start planting for fall!! The weather should start cooling down this month and you can grow both warm-season (beans + tomatoes) and cool-season crops (cabbage + broccoli) this month.
It may still be a little hot for the super cold-loving crops, so just pay attention to the weather and when it starts feeling like fall, it’s go time!
When you prepare your vegetable and flower beds, be sure to add a generous amount of organic matter into your sandy soils. Peat moss, manure, mushroom compost, and compost are all great soil amendments.
Monitor your garden
It’s always best practice to walk your garden and lawn looking for signs of insect and fungus damage so you can catch it before it becomes an issue. Check out our resources to learn more about Integrated Pest Management.
If you notice something that isn’t right, take some photos and send it to info@rockledgegardens.com or bring in a sample (in a sealed plastic bag) if you’re not sure how to treat for damage.
Light Pruning
Any major pruning is best left for the wintertime when plants are dormant.
Remove seed pods from your crape myrtles
Remove any remaining seed pods on your crape myrtles to encourage one more bloom cycle this month.
