How much do you need?
To determine the amount of soil needed for your raised bed, use this simple formula:
Length×Width=AreaLength×Width=Area Area×Depth=Amount of soil neededArea×Depth=Amount of soil needed
Example: For a 4×7 bed with 10-inch sides:
- Calculate the area: 4 feet × 7 feet = 28 feet
- Calculate the depth in feet: 10 inches = 0.83 feet
- Calculate the amount of soil needed: 28 square feet × 0.83 feet = 24 cubic feet
Our soil is sold in bags by the cubic foot or by the yard when buying in bulk. To convert cubic feet to cubic yards, remember that there are 3 feet in a yard. Therefore, 24 cubic feet is approximately 0.9 cubic yards.
After a growing season, top off your beds with fresh garden soil and consider starting a compost pile to reduce waste and enhance soil quality.
